My students average 90-120 points. Some even improve by 300 points or more!
I was once where my students are now. I was stressed. I was scared. I was overwhelmed. I just couldn't move the needle on my score, no matter how hard I tried. I didn't understand what was happening to me. I was a good student. I was smart. So why did I feel so dumb? I felt like the test was just out to get me.
What I didn't know at the time was that the test WAS out to get me.
You see, the SAT is a reasoning test, not an achievement test. Those tricks and trap answers are an integral feature, not a bug or a byproduct. The SAT doesn't ask, "Do you know this formula or that rule?" It just assumes that you do. The SAT wants to know if you can use those formulas and rules to think critically and find the answers to their (totally diabolical) questions.
For over ten years now, I've helped students raise their scores on the SAT by focusing on what really matters - not general math or reading comprehension skills but how to leverage those skills specifically on the SAT.
The SAT is hard. It's long. It's unpleasant. It's kind of like going up against an evil mastermind who revels in making you feel stupid. But you're not stupid, and this test can be conquered. Let me show you how!
Hi! I'm Kassandra, a veteran SAT Warrior with scores in the top 1% and over ten years of tutoring experience. I have seen so many bright, motivated, hardworking students struggle with the SAT, and it always breaks my heart to see how the number on a score report can make them begin to question their abilities...and, more heartbreaking still, their worth.
Students most often struggle on the SAT because the skills they learn in school are not the skills they need for the SAT. So I've made it my mission as a tutor to empower students with the RIGHT tools to get the job done. My programs blend strategy and content, with an emphasis not just on skill sets but how to apply them.
I know that these strategies work, because I used them myself! I was once a scared, frustrated, confused student struggling to raise my score. But with the right guidance, things started to click...and click HARD. I reached my score goals, and there's nothing I love more than to see my students do the same!
As much as I would love to be able to just crack open your head and pour a bunch of information in, I can't. And, even if I could, it wouldn't actually do you much good. The SAT isn't about information. It's about skill. And, unfortunately, the only way to build real skill is to work at it. Students who don't put in consistent effort and practice are unlikely to see significant increases on their SAT scores. It's as simple as that.
Let's be real: High school students have a LOT on their plates. Heavy course loads, varsity sports, club activities, theater or musical rehearsals...that all takes time, and there are only so many hours in the day. Adding 5 hours per week (2 hours of instruction plus 3 hours of practice) just isn't possible for some. For others, it may be technically possible...but maybe not advisable or fair. A higher SAT score may come at the cost of suffering grades or suffering health, which doesn't help anyone.
I get it. Juggling homework, extracurricular activities, and family obligations can be challenging. I do my best to accommodate the occasional canceled or rescheduled lesson, but availability can't be guaranteed - and it's SO important to stay consistent with lessons in order to maintain momentum and forward progress. For this reason, I strongly recommend that students book as many lessons as they can in advance and do their best to stick to that schedule.
Some students thrive in a private setting. Having someone who can focus solely on them and their needs makes these students feel supported and empowered. But other students find that being the focus of attention makes them feel pressured and uncomfortable, which can get in the way of learning. There's no right answer. You just need to do some soul searching or maybe some experimentation and find out whether 1-1 instruction feels right to you.
The SAT is built on certain fundamental skills that aren't tested directly but are necessary to successfully demonstrate the skills that are tested directly. In order to get the most out of your tutoring package, I strongly recommend that students master these skills before beginning SAT prep.
That's okay! Private SAT tutoring may not be right for you, but there are other options that may better suit your circumstances, learning style, or skill level. For example, The College Board has partnered with Khan Academy to provide quality instruction at no cost. While there's no substitute for a real, live human who knows the SAT inside and out, Khan Academy videos and quizzes can be a great a resource for students who need "anytime, anywhere" access or need to brush up on those fundamentals.
Alternatively, you may be a candidate for my SAT Warriors course, an online program that blends the flexibility of independent study with the support of private tutoring. Students have access to on-demand video lessons, weekly Zoom calls, and a private Facebook group where they can collaborate with each other and with me to work through difficult problems. I know it can be scary to embark on any learning journey, especially one with such high stakes. What if it's too hard? What if it doesn't work? What if you learn everything you need to and then it all just flies out of your head on test day? And, honestly, I can't guarantee that those things won't happen. But what I can guarantee is that I will show up for you 100% every step of the way and fill your toolbox with everything you need to improve your score. What's more, I offer new students the opportunity to take tutoring for a test drive, 100% free!
